Delhi is the third largest city of India. The city actually consists of two parts. Old Delhi was the capital of Muslim India between the 17th and 19th centuries. In Old Delhi you will find many mosques, monuments and forts relating to India’s Muslim history. The other Delhi is New Delhi, the imperial city created as the capital of India by the British. It is a spacious, open city. It is not uncommon to see cars, tongas and rickshaws on the same road. Old Delhi is over 2,500 years old. It is dominated by the grand bazaar of Chandni Chowk and by the Jama Masjid which is the largest mosque in India. You will be impressed by the stillness of this place as soon as you leave the ant-hill of narrow streets, vendor stalls and rickshaws and carriages fighting for a place on the road behind. It offers some excellent views of the city as well. Another popular sight is the old Red Fort that dominates the horizon with its minarets. Although it is in a rather neglected state, it is still an excellent place to wander around and breath in the atmosphere of the old emperor’s days. New Delhi is composed of spacious, smooth tree-lined avenues and modern houses and buildings. India Gate is a majestic high arch, 42 meters high, built as a memorial to the unknown Indian soldiers who lost their lives in the World War Ⅰ. Beneath it burns an eternal flame. From the base of the arch you can get a good view of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. What a fascinating and wonderful monument! Enjoy the lush green lawns of India Gate, which house the famous boat club and a children’s park. The lawns come alive in the evening with picnicking families and couples taking a stroll. Little children run about playing with balloons and eating ice creams. The use of special lighting means that the monument looks even more striking at night than it does by day. The beautifully lit up monument provides a memorable background against the darkening sky. |
